Who is a Good Candidate for Gynecomastia?

Are you struggling with enlarged male breasts and wondering if gynecomastia surgery might be right for you? In this article, we’ll outline who is a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery, covering essential health requirements, situations where alternative medical treatments fail, and the importance of maintaining realistic expectations.

Key Takeaways

  • Gynecomastia affects many men, leading to physical discomfort and emotional distress; surgery is often needed when non-surgical treatments fail.
  • Good candidates for gynecomastia surgery are healthy, have stable weight, and have realistic expectations about the outcomes.
  • The consultation process is crucial, involving medical assessments and clear discussions about goals to develop a personalized treatment plan.

Understanding Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction surgery, is performed to excise excess breast tissue and often involves the removal of fat and skin to achieve a more masculine chest contour. This condition, characterized by enlarged breasts in men, can have profound effects on both physical appearance and emotional well-being. We will delve into gynecomastia’s definition, typical causes, and its impact on individuals.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by the enlargement of male breast tissue due to the growth of glandular tissue rather than fat. This can lead to a noticeable increase in the size of the male chest, often causing discomfort and emotional distress. Unlike excess fat, glandular tissue cannot be reduced through diet or exercise alone, making surgical intervention the most effective solution.

Gynecomastia can be caused by hormonal imbalances, certain medications, or medical conditions and may affect men at any age. While some cases resolve naturally, others persist into adulthood. For many individuals, surgery offers a reliable way to remove the excess tissue and restore a more masculine chest contour.

Common Causes of Gynecomastia

Hormonal imbalance is frequently at the root of gynecomastia, usually characterized by an overabundance of estrogen or a lack of testosterone.

Such imbalances can lead to the development of glandular tissue in men’s breast areas, causing their breasts to become enlarged and giving rise to what is known as enlarged male breasts.

The enlargement may also be precipitated by certain types of medication consumption, including:

  • Anabolic steroids
  • Drugs for ulcers
  • Treatments involving chemotherapy
  • Certain HIV medications

Fluctuations in body weight—particularly persistent obesity—can accumulate excess fatty tissue that simulates gynecomastia. Such cases are deemed pseudogynecomastia because true gynecomastia consists of growth in glandular tissue, which remains unaffected despite attempts at weight loss. Hormone surges experienced during natural periods like puberty can incite transient episodes of gynecomastia.

Awareness regarding these factors assists in pinpointing appropriate interventions. Surgical procedures often come into play when non-invasive approaches prove ineffective against surplus breast tissue. Thus, surgery is considered both beneficial and sometimes indispensable.

Physical and Emotional Impact

Men afflicted with gynecomastia may feel self-conscious and experience a spectrum of physical symptoms, including soreness and discomfort to severe humiliation. This condition commonly leads to an intensified sense of self-awareness regarding their physique, prompting men to eschew situations such as swimming or frequenting the gym. The psychological consequences are just as significant, manifesting in feelings of vulnerability and diminished self-worth.

Post-surgical outcomes typically reveal a marked enhancement in confidence levels along with liberation from previous constraints on activities. Undergoing this corrective surgery can be life-changing for men, providing them with renewed assurance and elevating their standard of living overall.

Characteristics of Good Candidates for Gynecomastia Surgery

Not everyone who experiences gynecomastia is an immediate candidate for surgery. Good candidates for gynecomastia surgery are typically in good overall health, maintain a stable weight, and do not smoke or use recreational drugs. These health factors are crucial for minimizing surgical risks and ensuring a smooth recovery.

Candidates must also have excess breast tissue and excess skin that are not responsive to treatments like diet or exercise. This section will explore general health requirements, the significance of non-responsive excess breast tissue and excess skin, and the need for realistic expectations.

General Health Requirements

Maintaining optimal general health is crucial for individuals contemplating gynecomastia surgery. Achieving and keeping a consistent body weight is key to maximizing the success of the surgery and reducing potential risks. Since smoking can severely impair recovery, those who do not smoke are better suited for undergoing this surgical procedure.

To summarize, adhering to a healthy lifestyle including weight stability and abstinence from smoking stands as essential for prospective gynecomastia surgery candidates. Such practices play a significant role in ensuring safer surgical experiences and promoting quicker, more effective healing post-surgery.

Unresponsive to Non-Surgical Treatments

It’s imperative to confirm that the excess breast tissue has not responded to non-surgical interventions such as diet and exercise before contemplating surgery. This confirms that surgical treatment is indeed the appropriate subsequent action. Distinguishing between glandular tissue and fat plays a vital role in this assessment.

If attempts to diminish the enlarged breast tissue through changes in diet and physical activity are unsuccessful, then surgical options must be considered. This approach ensures that surgery is reserved for individuals who truly require it, thereby identifying suitable candidates for the procedure.

Realistic Expectations and Positive Outlook

It is vital for individuals contemplating gynecomastia surgery to possess a sense of realistic expectations and maintain an optimistic perspective. Recognizing the potential outcomes that the surgery can deliver, combined with sustaining a healthy lifestyle after the procedure, enhances the likelihood of achieving favorable results and increased contentment.

During initial consultations, expressing your anticipated outcomes helps ensure that the surgeon’s plan corresponds with your objectives. Adopting this approach imbued with realism and positivity is crucial for facilitating effective healing post-surgery and securing enduring gratification from the process.

Consultation Process for Gynecomastia Surgery

During the consultation, a thorough conversation with the surgeon regarding goals and expectations is essential to ascertain if an individual is a suitable candidate for gynecomastia surgery. This step includes a preliminary evaluation, consideration of aesthetic aspirations, and crafting a tailored treatment plan, all pivotal in determining if one is indeed an ideal candidate for this procedure.

Initial Assessment

In the preliminary evaluation, the surgeon gathers a detailed medical history that encompasses previous surgical procedures and current health issues. The surgeon also conducts an extensive physical assessment of the chest to determine the origin and severity of gynecomastia.

Imaging tests may be conducted to gain an in-depth perspective of the breast tissue. This process is vital in assessing if an individual is well-suited for surgical intervention to address gynecomastia.

Discussion of Aesthetic Goals

During the consultation process, it is crucial for patients to have an open dialogue regarding their aesthetic aspirations. They need to explicitly convey their expectations so that they match what the surgeon can feasibly accomplish. Such a conversation establishes the foundation for a successful outcome by ensuring both the patient and surgeon are on the same page regarding the desired results.

Treatment Plan Development

Following the preliminary evaluation and an in-depth conversation about desired outcomes, a customized treatment plan is formulated. It’s crafted with precision to meet the patient’s unique health requirements and cosmetic aspirations. The surgeon then meticulously outlines the surgical alternatives so that they correspond precisely with the patient’s specific needs and objectives.

Adopting this individualized strategy is paramount for realizing optimal outcomes.

Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery

The surgical procedure for gynecomastia does more than just excise surplus chest tissue. It greatly boosts an individual’s self-confidence, improves the aesthetic of the chest, and expands one’s ability to engage in a wider range of activities.

These advantages will be delved into thoroughly as we examine the multifaceted impacts of gynecomastia surgery.

Improved Self-Esteem

Gynecomastia surgery offers a substantial enhancement in self-esteem and mental well-being for many men. Post-surgery, individuals often experience heightened confidence and a reduction in self-consciousness regarding their appearance. This surge in assurance can revolutionize both personal and social engagements, empowering them to partake more fully in life’s experiences without the burden of insecurity.

Enhanced Chest Appearance

The procedure for gynecomastia yields a chiseled and masculine chest silhouette, boosting self-assurance and simplifying participation in physical activities such as workouts or sports. The surgery expands the variety of clothing choices available to men, enabling them to attire themselves with both confidence and fashion flair.

Increased Freedom and Activity Participation

Following surgery, a number of men experience greater ease in participating in sports and physical pursuits, leading to substantial improvements in their quality of life.

Reduced pain and heightened confidence allow these men to lead more energetic and satisfying lives.

Recovery and Aftercare

Adhering to proper recovery and aftercare protocols is key to ensuring optimal outcomes from gynecomastia surgery. In this segment, we will explore care immediately following the surgery, advise on sustained recuperation strategies, and provide a timeline for anticipated results.

Immediate Post-Surgery Care

A compression garment is typically used immediately after surgery to aid in the healing process. This garment should be worn for at least one month to ensure proper recovery. Patients may experience bruising and swelling, which are normal parts of the healing process.

Most people can return to work within one to two weeks, depending on their recovery progress.

Long-Term Recovery Tips

Most patients are able to engage in light exercise by the end of two weeks, taking care not to involve the pectoral muscles. After around six weeks have passed, they can start participating in more vigorous activities and exercises that focus on the chest.

In order to maintain their results, it is crucial for individuals to uphold a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity while steering clear of elements that might lead to weight fluctuation or hormonal alterations.

When to Expect Results

Patients typically begin to observe the ultimate outcomes of gynecomastia surgery approximately three to four weeks after the operation. It can take between three and six months to witness optimal results.

Gynecomastia surgery yields long-lasting effects that could endure a lifetime because both excess fat and glandular tissue are permanently excised during surgery.

Summary

In summary, gynecomastia surgery can be a transformative experience for men suffering from enlarged male breasts. By understanding the condition, identifying good candidates, and following a thorough consultation process, patients can achieve significant physical and emotional benefits.

If you meet the criteria and are ready for a change, consider consulting with a qualified surgeon to discuss your options. Gynecomastia surgery could be the key to a more confident and active lifestyle.

Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction

Deciding between a Tummy Tuck vs Liposuction? Tummy tucks remove excess skin and tighten muscles, while liposuction reduces stubborn fat. This article will help you understand which option suits your body goals best by exploring their differences, benefits, and recovery times.

Key Takeaways

  • Tummy tucks are best for removing excess skin and tightening abdominal muscles, while liposuction focuses on eliminating stubborn fat deposits.
  • Tummy tucks are more invasive with a longer recovery time compared to the less invasive liposuction, which allows for quicker returns to daily activities.
  • Combining both procedures can maximize results, targeting both fat removal and skin tightening for better body contouring.

Understanding Tummy Tuck and Liposuction

In the realm of body contouring, two prevalent procedures stand out: tummy tucks and liposuction, each offering its own set of advantages. Tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, focuses on removing excess skin and tightening weakened abdominal muscles that typically occur following considerable weight loss or childbirth.

Conversely, liposuction is designed to eliminate pockets of stubborn fat that persist despite a healthy diet and regular exercise regimen. Recognizing these essential distinctions between tummy tuck procedures and liposuction can be vital in determining which surgical option will best suit your personal objectives for enhancing your physical appearance.

What Is a Tummy Tuck?

Abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, is a type of cosmetic surgery that targets the abdominal region to remove excess skin and fat while also strengthening the core abdominal muscles. It’s particularly effective for those who have experienced sagging skin or weakened stomach muscles due to childbirth or substantial weight reduction. Tummy tuck surgeries come in different forms: The comprehensive version includes modifying the belly button’s position, while the mini version concentrates on correcting issues beneath it.

When performing a tummy tuck surgery, an accredited plastic surgeon executes incisions with precision to eliminate extra skin and adipose tissue from around your midsection. These cuts are also used for stitching together lax muscle fibers within your abdominal wall structure under general anesthesia. Occasionally, this operation can be paired with liposuction for even better contouring results. Ultimately, undergoing such treatment aims at providing individuals with not only reduced circumference but notably improved structural integrity, leading to both flatter tummies and more sculpted appearances across their entire abdominal zones after significant weight alterations.

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to remove stubborn fat deposits from targeted areas of the body, such as the abdomen, thighs, flanks, buttocks, and upper arms. It is an effective option for those struggling with localized fat that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. Unlike a tummy tuck, which also addresses loose skin and muscle repair, liposuction focuses solely on fat removal and body contouring.

During the procedure, small incisions are made, and a thin tube (cannula) is used to suction out the fat. Liposuction is less invasive than more extensive surgeries like abdominoplasty, and it’s performed under local or general anesthesia depending on the treatment area and amount of fat being removed. While liposuction can significantly enhance the body’s silhouette and reduce trouble spots, it’s not a solution for weight loss or a substitute for healthy lifestyle changes.

Key Differences Between Tummy Tuck and Liposuction

When choosing between a tummy tuck and liposuction, it is critical to grasp the primary distinctions between these two procedures. Each one improves body shape in unique manners, providing solutions for varied individual requirements.

It’s important to take into account the particular outcomes each offers, as well as how invasive they are and what their respective recovery periods entail.

Results: Excess Skin vs. Fat Removal

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that addresses the removal of excess skin, tightens lax abdominal muscles, and eradicates extra fat to create a firmer and more sculpted abdomen. It offers considerable benefits for individuals who have experienced substantial weight loss or whose bodies have changed following pregnancy by improving sagging skin appearance and rectifying separated muscles.

In contrast, liposuction exclusively targets the extraction of stubborn fat deposits from selected areas like the stomach, thighs, and hips. This method excels at refining body contours where diet- and exercise-resistant fat persists but does not correct issues related to loose skin or weakened abdominal walls. Thus, it may not be ideal for those with significant amounts of surplus skin after losing a large amount of weight.

Invasiveness: Surgical Procedure vs. Minimally Invasive

Tummy tuck surgery is more extensive than liposuction, requiring larger incisions and general anesthesia to remove excess skin and tighten abdominal muscles. This makes it a more invasive procedure with a longer recovery and higher potential for complications, especially when considering tummy tuck vs. liposuction.

Conversely, liposuction involves smaller incisions and is generally considered less invasive, enabling quicker recovery and reduced surgical risks.

Recovery Time and Process

Tummy tuck recovery is typically more extensive and requires longer downtime compared to liposuction. Patients may need about two weeks off work and should avoid strenuous activities until cleared by their surgeon.

Liposuction allows for a quicker return to normal activities, often within a week or two, with fewer restrictions and a generally smoother recovery process.

Who Should Consider a Tummy Tuck?

An abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, is highly beneficial for people struggling with loose skin and diminished strength in their abdominal muscles due to considerable weight loss or the aftermath of childbirth. It’s especially effective for those burdened with excess skin that fails to retract through diet or physical exercise yet yearn for a more sculpted and flatter abdomen.

Individuals considering this procedure should aim to conclude their family planning beforehand, as completing childbirth can help maintain the enduring effects of the surgery.

Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

Undergoing a tummy tuck can yield significant physical and mental advantages. This procedure eliminates surplus skin and fat, tightens the muscles in the abdominal area, and vastly improves the visual appeal of one’s stomach region. Achieving this more sculpted, flatter abdomen contributes to better-fitting clothes and improved body ratios. It helps resolve problems associated with drooping skin that may interfere with dressing comfortably or engaging in physical activities.

On an emotional level, undergoing a tummy tuck has been known to elevate self-esteem and perception of one’s own physique as individuals find themselves more satisfied with their looks. The positive outcomes of this surgery have long-term potential if meticulous attention is given to postoperative care, offering enduring enhancements to abdominal shape.

To optimize results, incorporating liposuction alongside a traditional tummy-tuck operation may simultaneously address redundant fat removal and excess skin reduction for superior aesthetic outcomes.

Potential Drawbacks

One should be aware of the downsides of a tummy tuck. This invasive procedure demands an extensive recovery period during which physical activity must be curtailed, and absence from work is necessary. Despite scars becoming less noticeable as time passes, they never vanish completely, posing potential issues for those concerned about such marks.

It’s crucial to recognize that complications can arise during any surgical operation. These should be thoroughly reviewed with a board-certified plastic surgeon prior to proceeding with the surgery.

Who Should Consider Liposuction?

Liposuction is best for individuals with stubborn fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. Ideal candidates are within 30 pounds of their goal weight and seek to remove excess fat to improve body contours.

Liposuction is a great option for those with minimal excess skin or muscle laxity who are primarily looking to sculpt specific areas of their body.

Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction precisely removes fat from the lower abdomen, waist, flanks, and back to achieve body contouring and a refined silhouette. This procedure leaves minimal scarring that is barely noticeable, enhancing the aesthetic outcome. The recovery time post-procedure is fairly brief. Patients can often return to light activities shortly after.

The ability of liposuction to tackle multiple regions in one go underscores its adaptability for comprehensive body shaping. It stands out as an exceptional method for eliminating persistent fat from several areas simultaneously while ensuring a swift recuperation period and insignificant scar formation—reasons why it’s frequently chosen for effective fat removal with minimal downtime.

Potential Drawbacks

While liposuction can greatly enhance body contours, it fails to eliminate excess skin or fortify lax abdominal muscles, posing a constraint. Uneven fat removal during the procedure may lead to contour irregularities like lumps and asymmetrical areas. This technique might also fall short of effectively addressing excess abdominal fat, which can impact self-confidence and contribute to health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure.

In certain scenarios, achieving the sought-after outcome could necessitate several rounds of this cosmetic treatment.

Combining Tummy Tuck and Liposuction for Optimal Results

Utilizing a combined approach for body contouring that includes both a tummy tuck and liposuction can lead to superior outcomes. This method effectively tackles the issue of stubborn fat pockets as well as excess skin, ensuring a more fulfilling and proportionate result.

Known specifically as lipoabdominoplasty, this amalgamated procedure uses just one anesthetic event and requires only one recovery period, offering an efficient alternative for those seeking such treatments.

Enhanced Contouring

Utilizing lipoabdominoplasty, which merges liposuction with a tummy tuck, delivers superior shaping advantages. This method facilitates the precise extraction of fat and then immediate skin tightening within one surgical procedure, leading to an abdomen that is both more defined and toned.

By taking this integrated route, various issues can be tackled simultaneously, yielding a tighter and visually more appealing outcome.

Suitability and Considerations

When considering a combined tummy tuck and liposuction, factor in the overall cost and recovery time. The total cost includes the surgeon’s fee, medical tests, facility charges, anesthesia, and medications. Additionally, the surgical technique used and the surgeon’s experience level can affect the price.

Patients should discuss these considerations with their board-certified plastic surgeon to ensure the plastic surgery procedure aligns with their goals and budget.

Cost Comparison

Patients can make educated choices about their surgical options by recognizing the variances in costs between tummy tucks and liposuction. The overall price of each procedure may differ greatly, influenced by elements like the complexity of the surgery, the skill level of the surgeon performing it, and where geographically it is done.

Tummy Tuck Costs

On average, tummy tuck costs range from $7,500 to $15,000, depending on the procedure’s complexity and location. The surgeon’s expertise and geographical location also significantly influence the final cost.

Patients should consider these factors and understand all associated costs before proceeding with the surgery.

Liposuction Costs

Patients are advised to have a thorough discussion with their surgeon regarding the entire financial obligation. The average cost of liposuction is approximately $4,711, not including anesthesia and facility fees. It’s important to note that this price can fluctuate depending on the complexity of the procedure and the surgeon’s experience level.

Realistic Expectations and Long-Term Results

Grasping the importance of realistic expectations and being aware of the enduring outcomes of tummy tucks and liposuction is essential for patient contentment. While both surgeries can yield significant enhancements, preserving these effects necessitates a dedication to living healthily.

Maintaining Results

Adopting a regimen of health-conscious habits is vital to preserving the outcomes of body contouring procedures such as tummy tucks and liposuction. It’s crucial to consume a well-balanced diet that includes an abundance of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to uphold one’s general well-being while also extending the life span of surgical results. Consistent physical activity plays a key role in weight management and sustaining the sculpted look provided by surgery. Strict adherence to post-surgical care instructions coupled with abstaining from tobacco use can markedly improve recovery and have a positive impact on the long-term effects of these operations.

The enduring nature of these cosmetic enhancements can be jeopardized by fluctuations in body weight following surgery. Engaging in frequent exercise routines along with maintaining proper hydration levels are instrumental in promoting skin suppleness, which contributes significantly to enhancing how patients perceive their postoperative appearance. Through dedicated commitment towards healthier living practices, individuals who undergo surgeries like tummy tucks or liposuction stand poised to reap prolonged rewards from their investment into aesthetic improvement for years down the line.

Expected Outcomes

Following a tummy tuck and liposuction, most patients witness a significant enhancement in their body shape. The outcome of a tummy tuck usually includes an abdominal area that is tighter and more toned, but it does create a horizontal scar that might lessen as time passes.

Liposuction, on the other hand, targets and removes persistent pockets of fat, leading to better-defined body contours with minimal scarring. These scars become much less noticeable over time. While both surgeries provide substantial benefits in terms of appearance improvement, individual results regarding scarring and outcomes may differ.

Summary

In essence, tummy tucks and liposuction serve distinct purposes suited to specific requirements. Tummy tucks excellently address the presence of excess skin and the issue of weakened abdominal muscles, whereas liposuction adeptly eliminates persistent fat accumulations. When these two procedures are integrated, they can yield a thorough body contouring effect for enhanced outcomes. It is crucial to assess factors such as expenses involved, recuperation periods required after surgery, and enduring commitments necessary for preserving the achieved results. With realistic expectations in place and well-informed choices made upfront, you are equipped to enhance your physical appearance with a flatter abdomen and refined figure that could ultimately elevate your self-assurance. Are you prepared to move forward on this journey toward achieving a more toned midsection?

From The Desk of Dr. Sukkar 3 Steps to Prepare for Breast Augmentation Surgery, Beauty is in the Details….

by Dr. Sam Sukkar

One of the most stressful experiences women feel while preparing for breast augmentation is selecting the size of breast implants to be used. However, we have great experience helping our patients through breast implant sizing and can make it clear, logical, and actually a fun part of your surgery. Here are three easy steps to help you select the right breast implant…

Step 1 Measurements:

Our first key steps in breast implant sizing are a bit more scientific. Dr. Sukkar will need to know the dimensions of your breast and chest. Think of these measurements as your real breast size. After all, when you try-on a new dress or pair of shoes you don’t select any size at random and see how it looks. Rather, you select your new dress to fit your body and shape, greatly dependent on your predetermined size. Your key dimension for determining your breast size is the width of your breast. The breast width is measured (in centimeters) from the cleavage area to the outer part of your breast, next to your arm. This is measured in a straight line and is not curved around the arc of your breast. Most women’s breast are about 11-14 cm wide.

Step 2 Vectra 3 D Imaging:

Vectra 3-D Imaging is the latest and so far the best way to get an idea of what your breasts will look like following your surgery. The Vectra system uses several cameras to generate a dynamic digital 3-D image of your breasts, which can then be manipulated on the computer to show how your breasts will look like after breast augmentation. The Vectra imaging system allows our patients and Dr. Sukkar to view and discuss realistic 3D simulations of their breast augmentation in advance of having their procedure done. Images depicting the likely outcome can be viewed from any angle, and they can be superimposed over the woman’s pre-op images to show the differences. The images can also be viewed side-by-side. The Vectra 3D imaging can generate a custom report including pre-op photos, breast measurements, and information on implant selection. Our patients can now see how their breasts will appear before having breast augmentation.

Step 3 Sizing- Trying on Breast Implants:

During your breast augmentation consultation with Dr. Sukkar, you will be given the opportunity to wear breast implant sizers in a number of different sizes to help you get a better idea about the look and feel your breasts will have after enlargement. Dr. Sukkar will talk to you about how different breast implant types will affect the appearance of your breasts, and how placement of the implants differs from merely placing them in the bra. Ultimately the breast implant size you select is your choice. We respect your needs and you prerogative in making this very personal decision. Simply put- we are dedicated to providing you with the results you desire.

Using high-resolution, color image capture and sharp, 3D resolution, the Vectra XT takes pictures of a patient’s face, breast, and body and combines the images with a software program that lets surgeons manipulate their appearance on the digital display to project possible outcomes following a procedure. Dr. Sukkar says the image capture takes only a few minutes and patients will then be able to experiment with different looks until they find the one that fits their needs. He says the images then help him create a customized surgical plan with his patients to establish an appropriate treatment.

“In our office, we spend a great deal of time going over appropriate implant sizes with patients and try to help them visualize their new look with implant sizers. However, patients continue to agonize over implant size. Vectra 3D Imaging can alleviate this concern for patients by providing a digital, interactive 3D image of their expected results.”

Dr. Sukkar says he hopes the new technology enhances his patients’ plastic surgery experience and provides them with the comfort of knowing what to expect from their procedure. How Long Do Results Last After Facelift Surgery?

HOW LONG DO RESULTS LAST AFTER FACELIFT SURGERY?

by Dr. Sam Sukkar

A common concern for patients considering a facelift, or any cosmetic surgery procedure, is how long their results will last. While this can vary according to genetics, lifestyle, and other factors, Dr. Sam Sukkar strives to help patients understand what they can expect should they undergo a specific procedure.

Facelift surgery, for instance, provides lifting of deep facial tissues to provide long-lasting results. It is designed to improve lax skin, fatty deposits, and loose muscles that develop in the face with age, returning it to a more youthful state. While a facelift can take years, if not decades, off the face, Dr. Sukkar emphasizes that the procedure will not stop aging. He says that after a patient undergoes the procedure, they can experience improvement for about six to nine months as the tissues heal. After this period, they can see a rejuvenated facial appearance that ages more gracefully with time.

Dr. Sukkar encourages anyone considering facelift surgery to schedule their consultation at Sukkar Aesthetic Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa to learn how the rejuvenative procedure can help them reach their aesthetic goals.

If you find it hard to imagine how you will look after your breast augmentation procedure you are not alone. In our office we spend a great deal of time going over appropriate implant size choices with patients and allow them to visualize their new look with implant sizers. Despite all of this effort, there still seems to be size choice issues which remain, and I have watched patients agonize over their implant size decision. I am excited to announce that we now have a new tool to assist our patients in visualizing their result, and it is called vectra xt 3D imaging.

VECTRA® 3-D IMAGING

ABOUT VECTRA® 3-D IMAGING

This technology has actually been around for quite some time, but it has finally evolved into a user friendly system that can be used in a time efficient manner in a busy clinical practice. Capturing the photo only takes about a second and the data is then processed by a computer. By the time the patient has returned to the consultation room, their images are ready to simulate and can then be reviewed with them.

The beauty of this system is that it has all of the commercially available breast implant sizes loaded in so that with the click of a button, a patient can see not only how she looks currently, but how she will appear after her augmentation. several published studies have validated it’s accuracy and patient satisfaction is around 95%! In addition, many of the patients who would have been reluctant to proceed with an operation were able to do so because of this technology.

This system is going to be implemented into our practice in the next several weeks and we are eagerly awaiting it’s arrival. While it will initially slow down the consultation process, after about a month of use the studies have shown that it actually makes the consultation more efficient, because narrowing down the appropriate choices is quicker and patient understanding is better facilitated. The patient can even get a printout of their anticipated result to take home and review!

The system has been clinically studied in several offices around the country prior to its release. Our office will be one of the first in Houston to get this new technology and I suspect that in a few short years it will be required for the offices of Plastic Surgeons practicing state of the art breast and body contouring surgery. In addition, i believe that the more discriminating, technology savvy patient will demand it, and seek out those practice locations for their breast augmentation surgery.

This new technology is one of several being incorporated into the practice in 2012. In addition to the 3D imager, we will also be rolling out the following: Smartlipo laser for cellulite treatment, powerX power assisted liposuction machine, as well as many other exciting things at sukkar aesthetic plastic surgery.

I will be writing informative articles on all of these exciting events in the next few weeks. We will continue to try and educate our patients and separate what is hype from fact. If there are other topics that you would like to see discussed, contact us or call us at 281.990.8487.

Houston Plastic Surgeon Reveals Advanced Potential Of Juvéderm Voluma XC

Dr. Sam Sukkar shares the unique advantages that Juvéderm VOLUMA XC has for patients interested in rejuvenating their facial appearance.

At The Clinic for Plastic Surgery and the PS Med Spa, Houston plastic surgeon, Dr. Sam Sukkar, offers a wide array of injectable options to help patients achieve a more youthful appearance. While there are numerous dermal fillers on the market today to treat wrinkles, lines, and folds and to enhance areas of the face, such as the lips, nose and chin, Dr. Sukkar explains that not all fillers are the same. Some, he says, are designed for specific areas of the face, like Juvéderm VOLUMA™ XC.

Juvéderm VOLUMA™ XC is the only hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler approved by the FDA to treat signs of aging in the mid-facial region. Dr. Sukkar explains that patients who are 21 years or older are eligible for the injectable and can experience the following:

  • IMMEDIATE VOLUMIZATION RESULTS
  • MORE AESTHETIC FACIAL CONTOUR
  • SMOOTHED WRINKLES AND LINES
  • LONG-LASTING RESULTS

He says the benefits of Juvéderm VOLUMA™ XC are numerous, with one of the most significant being results that can last up to two years. Compared to other fillers that tend to last 6 to 12 months and require touch-up treatments to maintain their positive results, Dr. Sukkar emphasizes the lasting potential of one Juvéderm VOLUMA™ XC session. He explains that the injections can add back subtle volume that is lost from fat and bone mass depletion caused by the aging process.

While Dr. Sukkar says Juvéderm VOLUMA™ XC can be a highly beneficial solution to facial aging, he notes that the filler may not be right for everyone. Other injectables offered at the plastic surgery practice include Radiesse®, Restylane®, Artefill®, and Perlane®, and he says each option has its own unique benefits. To learn which treatment is most suitable for an individual’s needs, Dr. Sukkar recommends scheduling a consultation with a qualified professional.

Houston Plastic Surgeon On What To Expect During The Facelift Process

Dr. Sam Sukkar highlights what the facelift procedure entails, as well as what patients can expect following their procedure.

Dr. Sam Sukkar, a plastic surgeon in Houston, strives to help facelift patients of The Clinic for Plastic Surgery know what to expect throughout their procedure and recovery process. He says this patient education is a crucial part of the consultation, as it helps them make a more informed decision about their facial rejuvenation options. Additionally, Dr. Sukkar notes this understanding can help patients maintain realistic expectations throughout the facelift process.

Dr. Sukkar explains that the Facelift procedure is tailored to each individual’s needs to provide them with the best results possible. He says the procedure typically takes about three to five hours, depending on the patient. During the surgery, Dr. Sukkar addresses deep tissue layers with the purpose of maintaining a natural look and achieving lasting results. For those interested in a more comprehensive rejuvenation, he says additional procedures can be performed during the same procedure, such as an eye lift or forehead lift.

Following facelift surgery, Dr. Sukkar explains patients can resume most activities within the first week and can typically be back to their normal routine by three weeks. As healing progresses, he says the facelift results should continue to improve for about six to nine months. After this point, Dr. Sukkar says patients should see their final outcome and begin a more graceful aging process.

For anyone interested in facial rejuvenation surgery like the facelift, Dr. Sukkar recommends scheduling a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon to learn about the most beneficial solution for their unique needs.

Houston Plastic Surgeon Answers Common Questions About Coolsculpting

Dr. Sam Sukkar details what the CoolSculpting procedure entails, answering basic questions about the non-invasive body contouring solution.

Dr. Sam Sukkar, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Houston, strives to offer a variety of surgical and non-surgical treatment options for patients at The Clinic for Plastic Surgery. CoolSculpting® is one of the latest additions to the practice, acting as a non-invasive method for body contouring. Dr. Sukkar explains that this advanced treatment can be a viable option for those wishing to reduce localized fat pockets without the need for much downtime. To clear up common questions about the procedure, he has answered frequently asked questions about CoolSculpting®.

In regards to how CoolSculpting® works, Dr. Sukkar explains that the technology has been designed to crystallize target fat cells during an intense cooling process, without harming surrounding tissue – a process known as cryolipolysis. As a result, he says the area is gradually contoured as the body naturally disposes of the damaged fat cells. While CoolSculpting® is not necessarily a substitute for more invasive procedures like liposuction, Dr. Sukkar notes that for patients desiring slight contouring with minimal downtime, CoolSculpting® can be a great alternative.

A common question that Dr. Sukkar receives is whether the procedure can help them reach their desired outcome. In terms of candidacy, he explains that patients should be of a healthy weight (not overweight) with stubborn areas of fat that have not shown improvement with diet and exercise. Dr. Sukkar notes that these individuals can see the best results from CoolSculpting®, should they not be interested in a surgical alternative.

Following the procedure, Dr. Sukkar informs patients they should see gradual improvement over the course of two to four months. If by this point, they desire further contouring, he may recommend an additional session of CoolSculpting®.

Houston Plastic Surgeon On When Breast Augmentation vs. A Lift Is Needed

Dr. Sam Sukkar distinguishes between when breast implants are more appropriate for a patient versus when a breast lift is ideal.

Offering a wide range of procedures at his Houston practice, Dr. Sam Sukkar, a board-certified Houston plastic surgeon, explains that breast surgery is a highly sought-after enhancement option. He notes that many women come to him wishing to alter the appearance of their breasts but are not always aware of which surgery is best for them: breast augmentation or a breast lift. Due to this common confusion, he works closely with each patient to establish their goals while also examining their anatomy to determine the best method for treatment.

The Houston surgeon explains that breast augmentation is typically best for those who desire a size increase through the use of breast implants. This enhanced contour, he says, can restore volume that may have depleted with age or from pregnancy. Dr. Sukkar also notes that many women have simply always wanted larger breasts or more symmetry between the two, which can typically be achieved with implants.

Should patients have moderate to severe drooping of the breasts, Dr. Sukkar recognizes breast lift surgery as the ideal solution. He says this procedure is designed to lift tissue to a more youthful level on the chest, which can also include raising the areolas so they no longer point down or sit below the level of the breast crease.

While each of these options can provide beautiful results when performed as standalone procedures, Dr. Sukkar explains that some patients may need both a breast augmentation and lift to achieve their results. He says this is the case when the patient has moderate to severe drooping, while also desiring an increase in their breast size.

Ultimately, Dr. Sukkar emphasizes that patients should seek a board-certified surgeon who is experienced in performing breast surgery. By doing so, he says they can understand which solution can help them achieve their ideal outcome.
